The Manhattan cocktail is often described as the perfect drink by millions of people who love its rich and bold taste. More importantly, it’s my favorite drink. We’ll get to the recipe, but in order to fully appreciate this beverage, we must learn a bit about its history.
History of the Manhattan
This drink rose to popularity back in in the early 1870’s by the Manhattan club located right in the heart of New York City. For a banquet in honor of Samuel J. Tilden, Dr. Ian Marshall invented this classic cocktail which honored both the presidential candidate and the city itself. The drink earned its name “the Manhattan cocktail” after the club where it was originate, the Manhattan club. The original mix consisted of American whiskey, Italian vermouth, and angostura bitters. This mixed drink became so popular that people from all over were requesting this drink at an array of bars over the city. Ever since then, this has been a popular cocktail that is a staple drink at bars all over the country.
This drink is even incorporated in many traditions around the world. On a quaint little island in the North Frisian area, the Manhattan cocktail is served at almost every cafe in the city. It is also very popular at parties and get together of all kinds. All in all, it is clear to see that the Manhattan cocktail is a drink that people love to indulge themselves in.
There are many variations of this delectable cocktail such as A Rob Roy that is made with scotch whiskey, a Tijuana Manhattan that is made of Tequila and of course, who can forget the royal Manhattan that is made from crown royal and Canadian whiskey. As scrumptious as these variations may be, nothing beats the classic Manhattan.
The Classic Manhattan is usually made up of several crucial ingredients. These ingredients are whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. Contrary to popular belief, the Manhattan cocktail is not a stirred drink. it is actually shaken in a mixer along with a touch of ice and then gently poured into a cocktail glass where people can enjoy its deep and fulfilling flavor. Yet, as this drink is so popular and delicious to so many – people are often wondering how to make the perfect Manhattan recipe. This so called perfect recipe only requires a few ingredients and is relatively quick and simple to mix. The recipe goes as follows:
- 2 ounces of bourbon and rye whiskey
- ½ ounce of sweet vermouth
- ½ ounce of dry vermouth
- 2 dashes of orange bitters and angostura
- The optional cherry of slice of a lemon peel for garnish
Once you have collected all the ingredients, you will combine the bitters, whiskey and vermouth into a cocktail shaker. You will then proceed to shake for about twenty seconds and then pour it into a cocktail glass where you have the choice to garnish it with a nice sweet cherry or slice of lemon peel. The final result is a drink that definitely lives up to its name “the perfect Manhattan cocktail” and sets the standard high for other mixed drinks. This drink offers the perfect combination of sweet and spicy that is is always a satisfying cocktail.
